what to expect
In my genius hour project, I will learn card tricks; not only just for fun, but also seriously.
I will learn the mathematical functions that make a card trick happen.
I will learn the sleight of hand to fool the viewer.
I will learn how to deceive you.
Welcome to the development of Card Mathematics!
Mentor: My mentor is a person who films tutorials to several card tricks on youtube. He thoroughly explains each card trick and how it works. He will be the one who will teach me all of these tricks for my final presentation.
Challenge: I have always been amazed by card “magic” and just found the topic very interesting to learn. It’s always nice to be wowed when your card shows up, and you walk away wondering how it happened. My essential question is How does mathematics play a role in card tricks?
Learning: I expect to learn 10-12 different card tricks, and in the final week or two, I will come up with my very own original card trick. This will be a challenge because it is something I have to physically practice every day to quickly pull a sleight of hand here and there. I will most likely have to learn different techniques as well of doing things such as “false cuts” and “breaks”.
Materials: I will use one deck of cards that I have in my house.
Main Steps: My procedure for the project will be:
1- I will have to gather information about sleight of hand and teach myself numerous tricks to be fluent with it.
2 - The learning procedure. Each week I will task myself with learning a new trick, then perfecting it. This seems easier said than done, but getting it right and not messing up is something I believe will be hard for me; I have big fingers and am not the best with sleight of hand in general.
3 - In the final two weeks, I will have learned 10-12 card tricks, and will task myself with creating my own card trick. I’ll have to use what I learned with sleight of hand and some mathematical concepts from the learning procedure to apply it to this trick. After creating this trick, I need to rehearse all of my tricks again; I am bound to forget some of the steps of this many card tricks, and I need to make sure they are all fluent.
I will document my progress to see if I am doing well by performing in front of my parents. This is good practice because not only do I have the experience of doing the card trick on another person, but they can also offer tips on what I did wrong and how I could do it better.
Time: The blog posts are due on Fridays, which means I have to immediately spring into action on the weekends; I have to learn the card trick, memorize each step, perfect it, and perform it within a week. I can do each of these steps per day and I can have a lot of time in the end for polishing each step.
Resources: I have always found these card tricks very interesting. There are plenty of other channels and videos of people performing and then explaining behind the scenes on how they did it. I haven’t seen any examples of this project yet.
Difficulties: Definitely the memorization. I assume there can be from five up to twenty different steps with card tricks. I also expect I will struggle with perfecting the performance, because my hands tend to be a bit sweaty while performing for others.
Sharing: Sharing with others is quite easy and fun at the same time; all you need is a deck of cards and somebody else’s interest in your trick. My target audience is anyone who wants to be wowed in the amazing world of card tricks.
Evaluation: I will declare my project a success if I:
1 - Learn at least 10 card tricks
2 - Come up with my own card trick (that makes people go wow!)
3 - Memorize all of the steps and have all card tricks perfected.
You can evaluate my success if you don’t figure out how I end up with your card in the end. This is a very visual form of a success, because card tricks are visual. My progress can definitely be measured throughout the project. You can ask me at any time in class to show you one I learned, and I should be able to show you. I think this project is perfect for this time frame and allows me to learn a large amount of card tricks of different variety. I can’t wait to begin
